Over the next few months we will be performing an energy efficient lighting trial / case study at the complex.

This trial involves replacing existing fluorescent lighting installed around the building walkways with LED lighting.

The trial will replace around 20% of the current lighting and will run for one electricity billing period (two months.)

This new LED lighting is stated to use 60% less energy than the current lighting and therefore if proven effective will pay for itself within 3 years of installation. After the 3 years we will experience savings until the lighting requires replacement (approx 10 years)

The total cost of the trial is $600.

08/08/2014 : The trial lighting has been installed.

12 fluorescent tubes have been replaced with LED tubes (just over 20%)

Rear Building
- First Floor : 12 LED tubes / 2 fluorescent tubes

PREVIOUS TOTAL: 56 fluorescent tubes
CURRENT TOTAL: 44 fluorescent tubes / 12 LED tubes

We will be monitoring power consumption closely over the next few months and will update this page with information as it becomes available.

16/08/2014 : The new lighting was installed just over a week ago and is already showing signs of reducing electricity consumption significantly.

Due to this reduction we are able to estimate that the new lighting will pay for itself in under 24 months.

Power consumption before change : 2150W
Power Consumption after change : 1550W (600W change or 50W per light fitting)
Savings per day after change : $1.10
Payback period : 1.5 years ($600.00 total cost / $1.10 per day = 545 days or 1.5 years)

The chart below shows the reduction in energy use before and after the lighting trial started.

As a result of the success of this trial, a program to replace all building lighting has commenced.
