Whilst the demolition of the old letterboxes was taking place a bottle with a note inside was found inside one of the concealed sections of the letterboxes.
The "Weaver & Lock Ginger Beer" bottle was found just under the top of the row of brick letterboxes closest to Charles Street. The bottle was sealed with mortar and had been pushed into a lump of mortar to keep it in place, a roll of paper could be seen inside the bottle.
After removing the bottle and clearing the mortar from the opening the paper was carefully removed from the bottle. Even after almost 40 years the paper was in reasonable condition, we believe due to the fact the bottle was completely sealed with mortar.
The paper was carefully unfolded and unrolled to reveal a note left by someone working on the building construction back in 1977.
The note reads:
RICHARD GILLARD BUILDER
ALAN MATHEWS FORMAN
-----------------------
KIM + ASKO BRICKLAYERS
-----------------------
14-7-1977
THE DAY OF THE BIG STRIKE
